Bringing a school group on a residential trip to Thornham.

We are delighted that you are bringing your class on a residential trip to Thornham.  We hope that this page will give you some of the information which you need.

On our downloads page you will find the residential visits information pack.

We understand the huge responsibility you have bringing away a group of children and endeavor to do everything to ensure that your group is safe, happy and that they learn a great deal from their trip.  If you would like to come and do your own risk assessments, please do telephone to make an appointment and we will help you in every way we can. We have our own risk assessments for our courses and for the cabins, rooms etc.  This is part of the information pack.

Accommodation is in two log cabins, joined by lobby area, there are showers, loos, a small kitchen, sitting room and class/dining room attached.  The kitchen has a small fridge, toaster, kettle, microwave oven and sink.  We cannot allow cooking on a conventional oven because of the fire regulations.

All the rooms except one has two beds, one has four, all are bunk beds.  Please note we no longer provide linen, please bring a sleeping bag, pillow case and towel.

A plan of the layout of the cabins might help you to decide who sleeps where

Please ensure the children bring suitable clothes.  Long trousers are best to protect legs from brambles etc.  If possible they should bring wellington boots as it is nearly always muddy at Thornham, we have some which can be borrowed,  otherwise old trainers.

Jean Marshall, our Education Officer, teaches most of the residential groups herself.  If there is a crossover day, she will bring in one of our other tutors.

When you arrive unload your luggage and leave it in the cabins.  We like to get going as soon as possible so ask that you  sort out your rooms after the teaching day.   Jean will give the group a short talk about your trip before the first activity.  To arrange your programme, please telephone Jean (01379 788345) or make an appointment to come and see her.   The full course list is available here

Please make sure everyone brings a packed lunch for the first day. If you would like us to provide a packed lunch for this first day there will be an additional cost of £3.50 per person.

T he Forge Cafe will provide your meals.  Please let us know on your booking form any dietary requirements on your booking form (identifying whether these are for adults or children).  Supper is eaten in the Forge Cafe.  You will be asked what sort of sandwich fillings you want for the next day's packed lunch.  There is also runs a small gift shop and we will tell you when it is a good time to do your shopping.  After supper you can play games on the grassy area in front of the cabins, you might like to bring balls, bats etc for this.  There is a video and tv in the cabins but no aerial, so if you would like to watch videos, please bring some with you.

Breakfast things will be brought up to the cabins for you in the kitchen area of the cabins.   You will help your selves to breafast when your teachers telly ou.  A rota for washing up and clearing up is a good idea.

On your last day we ask that you vacate the cabins in the morning before your lessons begin.  You will be given a key to our new shed where luggage can be locked until you are ready to leave.

We do hope you enjoy your trip.  Please get in touch with any queries.
