We
are introducing a new KS2 course in the Autumn called Playground
Pioneers. It is to be launched as the special offer
price of £3.25 per child for the first half of the Autumn
term.
This course aims to encourage
pupils to take an interest in their own playground. To help
make it more attractive to wildlife and become aware of what is
living there.
This course will include:
Minibeasts
- how to attract them, what are pit fall traps? how to set
them, what to expect to find in them. We will use sweep nets to
find out what is living in the grass, beating sheets will tell us
what is living in the bushes.
Conservation
- looking at what conservation is and why it needs to be done.
How to do it. What trees could be planted in a playground,
how to prune, what is coppicing? How is it done and how do you do
it? How to grow wildflowers in the playground.
Compost
- looking at worms and soil, compost bins and wormeries, what are
they for? Why use them? What to do with the compost.
Looking at nature's recyclers
Ponds
- how to look after playground ponds, what is living in the pond?
How to identify creatures, what about newts? What about tadpoles?
Food chains
- who is eating who in the playground?
There is also the chance
to make some bird boxes for your school grounds. An additional
charge of £2 will be made per box to cover materials.
